About john

John lives in St. John’s with his wife, Gillian, and their two young children, Maggie and Jack. He has two sisters, and grew up learning the value of hard work and the importance of family and community from his parents. His mother, Alice, is a recognized educational leader;  his father, Kevin, has served the province in the fields of psychiatry and public health.

John’s roots run deep across this province.  He has lived in Corner Brook, Holyrood and St. John’s. His grandparents’ origins cover much of the province - Corner Brook, Deer Lake, Conception Bay, Trinity Bay and Placentia Bay.

He is named for his grandfather, John Hogan, a Newfoundland Ranger, whose heroic feat of surviving 51 days in the woods on the Northern Peninsula caring for an injured companion, is well documented.

After graduating from Memorial University in 2000, John went on to study law at Dalhousie University.

In 2005, he was called to the bar in Newfoundland and Labrador after returning to the province to work at an Atlantic Canadian law firm. In 2014, John started his own small business with the opening of his own law firm, and was later appointed King’s Counsel in 2020.

John was a Bencher at the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, has served on the Memorial University Board of Regents, and has been a member of several community organizations including the St. John’s Port Authority, Clean St. John’s, and the Wreckhouse Jazz and Blues Festival.

In 2021 John decided to enter politics because he has a strong desire to give back to the incredible people of this province.

In March 2021, he was elected as the MHA for the district of Windsor Lake, defeating the then leader of the PC Party.

The following month he was appointed as Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, and was appointed as Minister of Health and Community Services in 2024. He has also served as Government House Leader since January 2023.

Under the leadership of Premier Furey, John has worked tirelessly on behalf of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.
